BREAKING NEWS: Selena Gomez’s Mother Mandy Teefey reflects on LIFE taking illness
Selena Gomez’s mom Mandy Teefey is opening up about her health on social media — and shutting down body shamers at the same time.
In an Instagram post this weekend, Mandy revealed that she’s received several comments about her body since appearing on the cover of Entrepreneur magazine this month alongside daughters Selena Gomez and Daniella Pierson. She posted one DM she received, which came from a user selling a weight loss program, noting that this was one of the more “polite” messages as opposed to name calling. “I wasn’t ever going to discuss this, but I knew when the Entrepreneur cover came out, comments on my weight were going to be DM’d to me,” Mandy wrote.
She went on to explain that when she posed for the magazine, she had been in the hospital just a few weeks prior while suffering from double pneumonia. Mandy also revealed that doctors told her she only had “days to live,” adding that she was able to recover thanks to the support from her family along with the incredible medical care she received.
“So, yesterday was a beautiful day for many reasons filled with personal attacks,” she continued. “I’m healthy and I will work on myself at my pace. It’s a miracle I am here and could care less if that means I’m a 16 instead of an 8. Much love to everyone.”
Mandy’s vulnerable post comes just days after she, Selena, and Daniella announced their new organization, Wondermind. The project is designed to promote conversation and tools surrounding mental health — a topic that has always been important to Selena as well. In her post announcing the upcoming initiative, Selena explained, “Mental health is something that is very close to my heart. It is so important to have places where people can come together and understand that they’re not alone in their mental fitness journey. That’s why I’ve joined forces with @mandyteefey and @daniella_pierson to bring you @officialwondermind – Launching in 2022.”
As far as the social media bullies go, Selena might also have some advice to offer, as the pop star is no stranger to dealing with cruelty online. In fact, it’s part of the reason why the singer-songwriter has taken a huge step back from her social accounts, leaving her IG mostly run by assistants.
“‘I don’t get anything from it. Nothing is giving me life,’” Selena said earlier this year of the defining moment that led her to quit social media entirely. Now, she feels like living solely in the IRL world has made her happier. “I say that because that’s a huge, significant part of why I feel like I’ve been as healthy as I have been,” she told WWD last month. “I’m completely unaware of actually what’s going on in pop culture, and that makes me really happy. And maybe that doesn’t make everybody else happy, but for me, it’s really saved my life.”
